Battery, powering the whole house

Battery, powering a home Serno-sodium battery

American researchers have created a battery capable of producing up to 20 kilowatt-hours. This is enough to power up on the day the whole house. The battery works in conjunction with sodium and sulfur. Sulfur-sodium batteries - this is a secondary chemical current source, known for its high specific energy, in which the anode is sodium, electrolyte - sodium aluminate (solid electrolyte), the cathode - a mixture of elemental sulfur with graphite. The main disadvantage of using such a battery is the high operating temperatures (above 300 degrees Celsius) and the associated risk of ignition of sodium.

However, the researchers say they have good connections to work already at 93 degrees Celsius. The secret of this battery is the presence of the ceramic membrane, which separates the sodium and sulfur. The positive sodium ions pass through the membrane, leaving the electrons, which in turn and create electricity. Ceramatec says that the batteries will be ready for entry into the market in 2011, with a cost of approximately $ 2,000.
